Government support for export businesses now available

The Australian Government has announced a small to medium business (SME) scheme that will aid aspiring and growing export-ready businesses, called the Export Market Development Grant (EMDG).

The EMDG provides successful businesses funding for eligible promotional activities. There is a maximum of $770,000 (over eight financial years) available and three tiers of funding ranging from $15,000 - $90,000 per financial year. Which tier your business falls within is determined by its export maturity.

What can you use the grant funds for?

The grant funds can be used for promotional activities to market eligible products in foreign markets, or training activities to develop skills in such marketing.

Is my business eligible?

Eligibility criteria for EMDG include the following:

  • Australian business with a turnover for FY21/22 of less than $20m.

  • As defined by the EMDG Guidelines, be an Australian person, and

  • Have eligible products and expenses.

  • First time exporters, or

  • Those with expanding export promotional activities, or

  • Those with expanding export promotional activities and making a strategic shift, such as targeting a new market or a new type of customer
